A lot has been said about the Vogue Empower video starring Deepika. It was too pretty. It talked only about the problems of the modern elite woman (as if it's a crime for the modern woman to voice her problems?). There are more pressing issues at hand. One word that was picked and much trolled was "MyChoice".
In the sea of parodies and responses to it, the one response that stands out is by none other than the loudmouth of the film industry, KRK. He tweeted this:
Kamaal R Khan-KRK (Tweet):
Good morning n kick on your ass. Today I am going to have sex with 16 years old maid coz it's my choice n her choice so don't mind Pls.
Firstly, Watch the below Video of KRK:
Now we don't even want to give him space here, but inadvertently the man proves something that should have been obvious to us. While it is perfectly all right to rip it apart logically, it is quite disheartening to see the lashout assume the tone of slapstick and slut-shaming. The average Indian internet user loves to oppose anything and assert his rights, if only for the sake of venting out some self-righteous anger in the universe.
1. Being a men's magazine, we advocate the video because we realize history has been unfair to women, and the choices that are relatively easy for men are not so for women. The message of the video, even if laced with branded ideas of beauty, just tries to bring out the fact that women have NOT been making those choices, because they suffer harsher consequences borne out of those very choices.
2. Yes, there are more pressing issues like poverty and Dalit rape. And that doesn't mean the more "trivial" (as pointed out by many) issues concerning the working modern woman can be given a miss. There are a hundred subtle and oft-ignored dualities that lie in our convent-educated sexist mindsets. It is not easy to sympathise with the independent woman or see her as a victim. But guess what, she has problems too?
3. Yes, the video is glamourous and is not the best way to propagate women empowerment, but does that mean it has no message? Vogue is a brand, and has the right to propagate its image. Does it even deserve the crazy backlash whipped by cynics crying foul?
4. Yes, the "sex outside of marriage" claim is controversial. Infidelity is unethical, period. But is that reason enough to dismiss the entire video?
5. And for those who are pointing fingers at the actress, claiming she has no right to talk about women empowerment since she too adds her two penny to keep up the 'women as sex objects' wave alive, we'd say get over it. It's a capitalist world; she has a profession that feeds on the baser sentiments; she is an actor; she is a woman. She lives in a sexist world, but not without an awareness of it. Is she not even entitled to talk about the world she has succumbed to?
