Nishinoshima: New Volcanic Island Emerging Off Coast of Japan

Scientists say the island, located south of Tokyo, offers a rare opportunity to study how life begins once volcanic activity ends. The island measures .95 square miles, the Japan Coast Guard said.

A new Japanese island formed by a volcanic explosion will provide a unique "natural laboratory" for exploring the starting point of evolution, according to scientists.

Nishinomiya, located 621 miles south of Tokyo, emerged from the Pacific Ocean following a volcanic explosion in November 2013 and now spans around 0.95 square miles.

The island, currently a barren expanse of rock formed from cooling lava, is thought to possess the optimum conditions to transform into a developed ecosystem with plants and possibly animals.

"We biologists are very much focusing on the new island because we'll be able to observe the starting point of evolutionary processes," Dr Naoki Kachi, professor and leader of the Tokyo Metropolitan University's Ogasawara Research Committee, told AFP news agency.

Sea bird droppings, feathers and rotting corpses are expected to be critical ingredients in creating nutrient-rich soil to fertilise seeds that will most likely be carried to the island by the wind.

Dr Kachi said: "I am most interested in the effects of birds on the plants' ecosystem – how their bodily wastes-turned-organic fertilisers enrich the vegetation and how their activities disturb it."

The emergence of Nishinoshima, located in Japan's remote Ogasawara chain of islands, echoes the case of Surtsey, a volcanic island which emerged off the coast of Iceland in 1963 and developed into a rich natural habitat.

The island, which is strictly protected by Unesco, has allowed scientists to learn more about the colonisation process of new land by plant and animal life in pristine conditions.

Similarly, Dr Kachi emphasized the importance of treating the emerging new Japanese island with respect and protect it from contamination of foreign species.

"I'd like to call on anyone who lands on the island to pay special attention to keeping it the way it is – not to take external species there," he said.

Liverpool To Express Eternal Gratitude To Steven Gerrard

Gerrard will say emotional farewell at Anfield against Crystal Palace but tears will soon dry knowing his role as coach is secured

A career spans a few years, but a reputation lasts an eternity. The esteem in which Steven Gerrard is held by Liverpool will only deepen beyond the final whistle against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers led the tributes ahead of Gerrard’s farewell performance, describing the captain as an emblem, not only of the club, but of the city he leaves behind.

“In Barcelona they have the quote ‘More than a club’. You look at Steven Gerrard and he is more than football,” said Rodgers.

“He is a real iconic figure for the support he has given to many people in this city. I’ve only been here a short period but in that time I’ve learnt the impact he has had as a footballer and as a person. It is a privilege to have worked with him. Our relationship is more like brothers, we support each other in our work. He is someone I hugely respect. What he’s given to this city, politicians haven’t given to this city. He is ‘Liverpool’.”

Anyone still asking why Gerrard turned down so many offers to leave over the past 17 years will witness the emotion at Anfield on Saturday and finally understand.

Being granted the red-carpet treatment when you arrive is not so difficult in football. To have it rolled out when you leave – after 17 years in which serenity has been as elusive as the Premier League title – is worth so much more than any medal.

A guard of honour and a Kop mosaic with the initials “SG” his number “8” and “captain” will mark the occasion. He departs with no cause to seek redemption, no sheepish statements requesting understanding for why he pursued success elsewhere; no revisionist study to assess how good he really was. He can spend his post-Anfield days watching his legend grow.

The Kop will say thank you. Thank you for being everything you promised as an 18-year-old. Thank you for the 185 goals; thank you for the match-winning performances that could fill the Anfield museum; thank you for the Olympiakos life-changer and the second half in the Ataturk; thank you for the 2006 FA Cup final and every other major occasion you showed up for.

Most of all, thank you for still being here through some of the most turbulent periods in the club’s history.

What he leaves behind will only sink in next season. When the players convene for summer training and realise their mentor is no longer around to offer a quiet word or a rallying cry. When Rodgers, while staring at a dressing room that looks mostly like it has been delivered enthusiastically from kindergarten, seeks a senior player to convey his message.

When Liverpool need an intervention to prevent a dour draw or deflating defeat, and their captain is not there to demand the ball and fling himself into every tackle. When periods of introspection call for a comforting voice to speak to supporters, capturing the mood with another scathingly honest post-match assessment or restoring optimism with a defence of an under-siege manager or team-mates.

And even when the multitude of analysts search for a reason for an upturn or downturn in form, turning their annual gaze on the captain, assessing how or where he fits into the tactical master plan.

“For so many years Steven has been the go-to man, not just for this group but a whole raft of players,” Rodgers said. “This will provide the opportunity for others to show leadership qualities. Let’s not forget we have won games when Steven has not been playing and won some big games, but there is absolutely no doubt with the respect that he has – because of the level of player he is and because of his behaviour – he will be missed.

"When you’re a world-class player that is the standard you’re held to. Now is an opportunity for the young players to show they can take on the mantle.”

When the laments about lack of leadership, quality and empathy seep through, Gerrard will be in Los Angeles, the responsibilities he has cherished but also burdened himself with having passed on to others.

So many at Liverpool have thrived by touching the hem of his greatness. Gerrard did not merely make his mark on Liverpool history, he changed the course of it, bending it to his will.

We must speak of Liverpool before Gerrard’s debut in 1998 and after it.

When he started, Paul Ince was captain, a brilliant footballer with a personality disconnected from the Kop.

Gerrard arrived in a line-up often accused of lacking character and having forgotten how to regularly win Merseyside derbies, never mind trophies. He would hold the League Cup (three times), the Uefa Cup, the FA Cup (twice) and the Champions League. He would score in a final of each of these competitions.

There was frustration when he opted to relocate not simply because he was taking his ageing talent to the States but also his insight and football wisdom.

Liverpool have had the sense to map out a plan for his return before the ink is dry on the farewell card. You can allow Gerrard his sabbatical, but it would have been negligent to fail to secure his apprenticeship as a coach.

No one is bigger than Liverpool Football Club, they say. That convenient phrase rolls off the tongue with little to challenge it, and in 99 per cent of cases it is correct. What that does not account for is those who define the club. The personalities who come along once in a generation and embody Liverpool, its values and its aspirations; those who naturally speak for it.

The institution itself only began to thrive because those of talent and vision – obsessive, achingly passionate football men – propelled it to excellence. They are the safety net within, those whom supporters can rely on to protect their interests and match their wants off as much as on the pitch.

They may be managers, players, backroom coaches and, yes, even administrators (see former chief executive Peter Robinson for more details), but they are integral to the club remaining true to itself.

At times you would sit in a room with Gerrard and he would be concerned his words would lead to “big headlines”. Twenty minutes later you would leave with his annual state-of-the-nation address. His unrepentant desire for those in power at Anfield to pull their finger was an undercurrent of virtually every discussion.

His frowns during darker days betrayed his feelings of disillusionment, his interviews cut through the speculation either to confirm his doubts regarding the future or his decision to stay.

Yet for all those frustrations, constant anxieties, the head-shaking at the transfer duds, ownership squabbles and irritation at politicking behind the scenes, he stayed. The pursuit of another Istanbul – the Premier League title would have been it – kept him going.

Footballers and managers are increasingly transient. They can arrive as part of their career development plan, seeing themselves in a venue for a couple of years before continuing their journey. You cannot blame them, as most are no longer masters of their own destiny. Unstable relationships with fans are inevitable.

That’s why those such as Gerrard are so rare and why their departures are epochal.

The modern history of Liverpool begins with Bill Shankly, working through the boot room to Kenny Dalglish and all he characterises. Gerrard belongs in their company.

“He’s had a number of opportunities to move from here to prestigious clubs but Liverpool is his home,” said Rodgers. “This is his place, these are the people he loves, he grew up around the corner. He went on to play for the club he supported.”

Is Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Bombay Velvet’ A Flop Already? Twitterati React!

Ranbir, Anushka's 'Bombay Velvet' has just managed to reap in Rs 5.20 cr on day 1, much lower than what was expected.
It’s a mere coincidence that the director who gave Ranbir Kapoor a disaster by the name of ‘Besharam’ in 2013 – Abhinav Kashyap – happens to be Anurag Kashyap’s brother. Anurag has directed Ranbir’s recently released ‘Bombay Velvet’.

The Big-shot movie ‘Bombay Velvet’, who had had hopes pinned on itself of becoming the “Blockbuster of the year”, is looking set to drown, blame it on the content or the hype created around it or so say the reports.

Must read – ‘Bombay Velvet’ review: Ranbir, Anushka shine only occasionally

As soon as it was released, the audiences as well as critics didn’t seem too happy with the official trailer of the movie. It was only after the launch of the first song and few dialogue promos that the movie picked some steam. But by then, the damage had been done.

People were expecting a good opening atleast if not the sustenance. But reports now say that the Anushka – Ranbir starrer has just managed to reap in Rs 5.20 cr on day 1, much lower than what was expected.

Film critic Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to express his disappointment with the collections.

‘Roy’, which released in February and had Ranbir in a “dynamic” role as the credits said, also was a flop. However, it had managed to earn Rs 10 cr on the day of its release.

This certainly raises many a question. Have the audiences lost faith in Ranbir’s star power? The answer better be no, for nothing can take away from the young superstar what he has done in movies like ‘Wake Up Sid’, ‘Rocket Singh’, ‘Rockstar’ and ‘Barfi’ among others.

‘Piku’, starring Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan in the lead, despite being released on almost half of the screens (1400 in comparison with ‘Bombay Velvet’s 2600) managed to earn Rs 5.32 cr on day one.
People have been taking to Twitter to mention the dismal collections of ‘Bombay Velvet’ and most particularly of Ranbir Kapoor.
Ram Gopal Varma, who has lately become famous for his foot-in-the-mouth statements, also lambasted the movie.

‘Piku’ continues to do a descent job at the Box Office marching slowly but steadily to big figures.
Piku’ and ‘Gabbar is Back’ are, thereby, expected to benefit from ‘Bombay Velvet’s poor show at the Box Office, especially ‘Piku’ which is riding high and steady on the good word of mouth.

Micromax Yu Yuphoria launched in India for Just Rs 6,999 Only with Cyanogen 12 OS

It will be available from Amazon.in and registration for the same will start at 5 PM while sales will start from 28th May.
While Samsung may be in competition with LG, HTC and Apple, Micromax has its target fixed on Xiaomi. The Indian handset maker launched a new sub-brand last year, known as Yu, along with the first device under that name, the Yu Yureka. That particular device came with a 5.5-inch HD display and ran Cyanogen OS 11. Now the company has launched its second Yu device, the Yu Yuphoria.
The 5 inch Yu Yuphoria uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 64-bit processor, has 2GB of RAM, supports 4G LTE, and includes an 8 mega-pixel rear camera plus a 5 mega-pixel front facing camera. In terms of battery, the dual-SIM based Yuphoria uses a 2230mAh battery, and weighs 143 grams. It will retail for around 6,999 INR in India (which is just under $110).
It is clear that Micromax wants to beat Xiaomi at its own game.

If $110 seems like a price point you have seen before, it is because that is roughly the price ofXiaomi’s Redmi 2. Xiaomi’s device also uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 64-bit processor, and also features an 8 megapixel rear camera. However Micromax has made sure that the Yu Yuphoria beats the Redmi 2 in just about every other department. The Yu Yuphoria has a 5 inch, 720p display (with Gorilla Glass 3), while the Redmi 2 has a 4.7 inch display. The Yu Yuphoria offers 16GB of on-board storage, while the Redmi 2 maxes-out at 8GB. The Yu Yuphoria has double the RAM of the Redmi 2, at 2GB, and offers a better front facing camera.

It is clear that Micromax wants to beat Xiaomi at its own game. Part of that plan also includes move to assemble the Yu Yuphoria in India, rather than getting the complete devices directly from China.

Like the Yu Yureka before it, the Yu Yuphoria will run Cyanogen OS. However not version 11, but version 12, which is based on the Android 5.0 Lollipop code base.

Nepal Again: 7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Country's Border Near Mount Everest

Nepal has been hit by another strong earthquake, sending people in the capital Kathmandu rushing out on to the streets just weeks after a devastating quake killed more than 8,000 people and destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes.

The US Geological Survey initially said the quake had a magnitude of 7.1 and struck 42 miles (68km) west of the town of Namche Bazaar, close to Mount Everest. The quake was later upgraded to a magnitude of 7.3. Shockwaves were felt as far away as the Indian capital, Delhi, and Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage. Residents in the Indian town of Siliguri, near the border with Nepal, said chunks of concrete fell off one or two buildings.

Tuesday’s quake came from a depth of 11.5 miles, deeper than the 9.3-mile depth of the quake on 25 April. More shallow earthquakes tend to cause more damage at the surface.

People in Kathmandu, panic-stricken after the 25 April quake, rushed outdoors, Reuters reporters said.

Parents could be seen clutching children tightly and hundreds of people were frantically trying to call relatives on their mobile phones. Shopkeepers closed their shops and the streets were jammed with people rushing to check on their families.
“I’m heading straight home,” said Bishal Rai, a man in his 20s, who said he was trying to contact his family in the north of the capital.
“This is a really big one,” said Prakash Shilpakar, the owner of a shop in Kathmandu who was trying to call his parents in Bhaktapur, a town devastated in the 25 April quake.
In Delhi buildings swayed for more than a minute and people scurried into the streets.

The quake’s epicentre was close to Everest base camp, which was evacuated after an avalanche triggered by the 25 April quake killed 18 climbers. Mountaineering companies have called off their spring expeditions on the world’s tallest peak.

Last month’s quake killed at least 8,046 people and injured more than 17,800. It was recorded at 7.8 magnitude, almost four times stronger than Tuesday’s quake.

But a 7.4 magnitude earthquake has the potential to cause significant damage and landslides.

Katrina Kaif: Actor Ranbir Kapoor Confirms Relationship With Actress, Announces Plans to Marry.

There was a time, Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif used to hide their relationship from the cameras. And each time they were caught, the two would very confidently deny any (and every) rumour.

Fortunately for us, the couple will not hide anything, anymore! Because it seems like now, the 33-year-old actor has decided to let us in on some personal details (regarding Ms. Kaif, of course). Recently, he spoke to Anandabazar Patrika and told them,
"This year both of us are extremely busy, so there won’t be any time for the marriage. We have planned to tie the knot by the end of next year. Both of us have agreed on that. Both of us are sure about our relationship and if we don’t open about it now, it would be showing disrespect to the relationship. I am 33 now and it is time I have my family. Even Katrina wants that. I have grown up in a family where film is everything. So, I know the importance of gossip and my funda is simple. When there is gossip, try not to react and it is advisable not to think too much about yourself."
That’s quite sensible, right? They make such a cute couple, and since he wants to start a family soon, I can’t help but imagine how adorable their kids are going to be.
